Interior Lime Plaster Walls
Original lime plaster is the dominant interior wall surface in Cotswolds period properties. It is breathable and absorbs moisture naturally — it needs a compatible primer before any emulsion coat.
We use breathable lime-compatible primers as standard on all original lime plaster walls across the district, including properties in Chipping Campden, Bourton-on-the-Water, Painswick, and Tetbury.
Plasterboard and Re-Plastered Walls
Modern plasterboard and freshly re-plastered walls are the other common interior surface. New plaster needs to dry fully before painting — allow at least four weeks.
The first coat should be a diluted sealing coat that settles into the surface without trapping moisture. We advise on drying periods at the quotation stage.
Exterior Masonry Walls
Cotswold stone exterior walls need a breathable masonry coating, not standard masonry paint, which traps moisture and causes paint failure on limestone.
For the full treatment process including biological growth treatment and render repair, see our masonry painting page. For full exterior work, see exterior painting.
Feature and Accent Walls
A single wall in a bold or contrasting colour changes a room without a full repaint. In Cotswolds period properties, chimney breast walls, alcove walls, and the wall behind a bed are natural candidates.
Preparation is more important for feature walls in deep colours. For dedicated feature wall scope, see our feature wall painting page.
Textured and Artex Walls
Artex and patterned textured walls are common in Cotswolds properties modernised in the 1970s and 1980s. They can be painted with a thick-nap roller without disruption.
We do not sand pre-2000 Artex as it may contain asbestos. Where a smooth finish is required, overskimming by a plasterer is the right approach.

Our Wall Painting Process
1. Surface Assessment
We identify the wall type — lime plaster, plasterboard, stone, or render — and confirm the correct primer and paint system. We note any cracks, mould, damp, or biological growth that needs treating first.
2. Surface Preparation
Cracks are filled with appropriate filler for the surface type. Biological growth on exterior walls is treated. Lime plaster receives a breathable primer. New plaster receives a diluted sealing coat first.
3. First Coat
The first coat seals the surface and builds the base for the finish coats. This coat is most important on problem surfaces — new plaster, lime plaster, and water-stained walls all need careful application.
4. Finish Coats
Two finish coats are standard on interior walls. Exterior walls in exposed positions or with high moisture risk receive a third coat. We allow adequate drying time between coats.
5. Final Check
We inspect all wall surfaces for patches, uneven coverage, and missed areas. Feature wall edges are checked at all junctions. Touch-ups are completed before we leave.
Wall Painting Costs in the Cotswolds
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01285 708711 for a precise quote.

Wall Type
Lime plaster requires breathable primer and may need more preparation than smooth modern plasterboard. Exterior stone and render need a specialist paint system rather than standard interior emulsion.
Surface Condition
Walls in good condition with sound existing paint take less preparation. Walls with cracks, previous mould, or build-up of old coats need more work before painting.
Interior wall painting typically ranges from £8 to £18 per square metre, including preparation and two finish coats. A single period room in good condition typically runs £250 to £500.
Accessibility
High internal walls in double-height Georgian hallways and external walls above two storeys require access equipment. This adds to the overall cost.
For home offices and dedicated work spaces, see our home office painting page.
