Cotswold Stone Exteriors

Cotswold stone cannot be treated like modern masonry. Standard impermeable masonry paint seals the surface and traps moisture as the limestone breathes through seasonal temperature changes, causing blistering, paint failure, and spalling.

Breathable masonry paints and limewashes let the stone cycle moisture naturally. A correctly specified job on Cotswold stone should last seven to ten years. For stonework and rendered surfaces, see our masonry painting page.

Lime Render Exteriors

Most pre-1920s properties in the Cotswolds were finished with lime render rather than modern cement-based products. Lime render is flexible and breathable — standard masonry sealers are not compatible with it.

Before painting, structural cracks, hollow areas, and poorly bonded sections are checked. Loose render is repaired before painting begins, and breathable systems are used as standard on all lime-rendered surfaces.

Windows and Woodwork

Many sash windows in Cirencester, Tetbury, and Moreton-in-Marsh are original Georgian or Victorian joinery. Stripping back to sound timber, patching any rot, priming correctly, and applying durable exterior gloss or satin is standard practice.

Painted sashes are checked to slide freely on completion. For dedicated commissions, see our window frame painting or door painting pages.

Front Door and Entrance Features

A front door on a listed stone cottage is one of the most visible parts of the property. Timber is stripped back to sound material, splits filled, and the correct exterior primer applied before finishing in your chosen colour.

Gate piers, stone boundary walls, and entrance features are treated with the same breathable approach as the main house walls. For a dedicated front door commission with heritage finish options, see our front door painting page.

Garden Walls and Outbuildings

Stone boundary walls and outbuildings need the same care as the main house. In Chipping Campden and Bourton-on-the-Water, gate piers and garden walls are often original Cotswold limestone — the same breathable paint system applies.

Garden fencing and sheds are assessed and priced at the same site visit. For standalone commissions see our fence painting, shed painting, deck painting, and wood painting pages.

Garage Door Painting

Up-and-over, sectional, and side-hinged garage doors are painted in any exterior finish. For a dedicated commission, see our garage door painting page.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site Assessment

Every surface is checked — noting surface type, existing coating, render condition, and any biological growth. Structural repairs needed before painting starts are identified.

2. Surface Preparation

We clean moss, algae, and loose material. Lime render is repaired where needed. Timber is stripped to sound material. Biological growth is treated and allowed to dwell before rinsing.

3. Priming

Cotswold stone gets a breathable mineral primer. Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. The right primer for each surface is what makes a finish last.

4. Paint Application

Exterior paint needs a dry window of 48 to 72 hours to cure. We monitor the local weather forecast and plan application phases around it. Two finish coats are standard; high-exposure elevations get a third.

5. Inspection and Touch-Up

Once the final coat has cured, we inspect all surfaces in good light. Touch-ups are completed before the job is closed, and your decorator walks through the finished work with you before sign-off.

Exterior Painting Costs in the Cotswolds

Exterior painting typically costs between £20 and £50 per square metre, including preparation and two finish coats. Total project costs usually fall between £1,500 and £7,000+. Prices below are estimates — call 01285 708711 for a precise quote.

Surface Area

A four-elevation stone farmhouse has far more wall area than a modest cottage. Access requirements also increase with height and roof pitch.

Budget 20 to 40 per cent more for Cotswold stone properties than for an equivalent rendered property elsewhere — breathable paint systems cost more per litre and take longer to apply.

Surface Condition

Poor lime render needs repair before painting. Timber in poor condition needs stripping. Heavy biological growth adds treatment time.

Typical ranges: stone cottage (two elevations) £2,000–£4,000; Georgian townhouse (three to four storeys) £3,500–£7,000; full exterior with woodwork on a 3-bed Cotswolds stone property £2,500–£5,000.

Paint System

Standard masonry paint is the most economical option. Breathable mineral or lime-based systems cost more per litre and take longer to apply, but the longer service life justifies the extra cost.

A correctly specified breathable system on Cotswold stone should last seven to ten years. Call 01285 708711 to arrange a site visit and written quote.
