Staircase Painters in the Cotswolds

Each baluster is painted individually. In Georgian townhouses in Cirencester and Tetbury, turned balusters have multiple profiles and shoulders. Every recess and ridge needs to be reached.

We sand between coats and inspect each baluster before moving on. Victorian and Edwardian staircases in Stroud and Nailsworth often have more heavily turned spindles requiring the same careful approach.

The handrail takes the most physical wear on any staircase. Previous paint builds up in the grooves of a moulded handrail and needs sanding back before any fresh coat goes on.

Newel posts in Georgian properties are often large, profiled pieces with cap details. We hand-paint the cap, shaft, and base separately to ensure full coverage without build-up at the transitions.

Painted risers in a period property are typically white or cream gloss. We apply gloss in two coats on risers with sanding between. Where treads are painted rather than carpeted, we use a hard-wearing floor paint or floor enamel.

The sequence of riser and tread painting is planned so the staircase remains usable throughout. We agree a working access plan with the client before starting.

The understairs space is often neglected in a hallway repaint. A painted understairs cupboard or open understairs area in a consistent finish ties the whole hallway together.

We include understairs areas in staircase or hallway projects on request. Where the understairs area has its own door, we paint the door and frame as part of the same scope.

The staircase wall from hall level to landing is awkward to reach and difficult to cut in at the correct raking angle against the stair string. We use appropriately positioned ladders or tower scaffold in tall Georgian stairwells.
