Masonry Painting Services in the Cotswolds

Cotswold stone is the dominant exterior material across Cirencester, Chipping Campden, and virtually every village in the district. We use breathable masonry systems on every stone and lime render job.

Rendered Walls

Render is common across post-war housing in Cirencester and Fairford, as well as on extensions to older stone properties. Smooth, pebbledash, and textured renders each have different preparation requirements.

We inspect render for cracking, hollow sections, and moisture ingress before any paint is applied. We use breathable silicone-modified masonry paint as standard, allowing moisture vapour to escape while repelling liquid water.

Exposed Brick

Victorian and Edwardian properties in Stroud, Nailsworth, and the older parts of Cirencester often have exposed brick on chimney stacks, rear elevations, and outbuildings.

We assess whether paint removal is needed or whether overcoating with a breathable masonry paint will give a better long-term result. All mortar joints are checked and repaired before priming.

Stone Facades

Cotswold limestone is porous by nature. Where stone has been painted previously, or where a client wants weather protection, breathable lime-compatible masonry paint is the correct choice.

Stone on listed buildings in Chipping Campden, Tetbury, and Painswick requires particular care. We advise on appropriate products and recommend consulting the conservation officer where needed.

Breathable Paints

The most important factor in masonry painting on period property is breathability. Walls built with lime mortar regulate moisture by absorbing and releasing water vapour through the fabric of the building.

We specify breathable paints across all masonry work as standard: silicone-modified emulsions for rendered surfaces, limewash for unrendered stone, and microporous coatings for high-exposure elevations.

Biological Growth Treatment

The Cotswolds’ rural setting and high rainfall mean algae, lichen, moss, and black spot are common on north-facing walls and shaded elevations. Painting over live growth makes it come back faster.

We treat growth with a mould treatment, allow adequate dwell time, then brush off and rinse before preparation begins. A fungicidal additive can be incorporated into the final coat to extend the growth-free period.

Our Masonry Painting Process

1. Assessment

We inspect all masonry surfaces: existing paint condition, any cracks or hollow render, moisture readings where required, biological growth, and pointing condition.

2. Treatment

Biological growth is treated and allowed to die back before preparation begins. Skipping dwell time leads to early recurrence under the new coat.

3. Preparation

Cracks and defects are filled. Loose render is raked out and repaired. Pointing is checked and repaired where needed. Surfaces are cleaned down and allowed to dry fully.

4. Priming

We apply the correct masonry primer for the surface: stabilising primer for chalky surfaces, masonry primer for fresh renders, and lime-compatible primer for stone and historic materials.

5. Finish Coats

First coat applied by brush or roller, worked into the surface texture. Second coat applied after full drying. Colour and opacity checked on completion.

Preparation Costs

Heavy biological growth, cracked render, or failed existing paints add time before a brush touches the final coat. Well-maintained properties cost less to repaint.

A single elevation on a terraced cottage typically costs £600 to £1,200 including preparation and two coats.

Access Requirements

Most properties in the Cotswolds are two or three storeys. Scaffold or tower access is needed for safe work at height. Scaffold costs are included in our quote and confirmed upfront.

A full exterior on a Cirencester Victorian semi-detached typically costs £1,400 to £2,600 depending on storey count and condition.

Surface Complexity

Smooth render is faster to coat than textured pebbledash or rough-cut stone. Complex elevations with multiple window openings and reveals take longer.

A full exterior on a Chipping Campden stone cottage, two storeys, typically costs £2,000 to £4,000. Listed status and access requirements affect the final figure.
