Front Door Painting Services in the Cotswolds

Timber Front Doors

Timber entrance doors in the Cotswolds range from original oak doors in listed Chipping Campden cottages to solid pine six-panel doors in Cirencester and Tetbury townhouses. The approach is the same: strip back to sound timber, treat any rot, prime correctly, and apply a durable exterior finish.

We use flexible, UV-stable finishes that move with the timber and resist peeling. For conservation areas and listed buildings, we advise on appropriate colour choices before starting.

uPVC and Composite Doors

uPVC doors that have yellowed or faded can be painted without replacement. We use a specialist adhesion primer designed for plastic surfaces, followed by a durable topcoat that lasts six to eight years under normal conditions.

Composite doors can be repainted when the factory finish dulls or chips. Colour changes — including light to dark or custom shades — are all possible. We give honest advice on suitability before starting.

Porch Surrounds and Frames

The front door and its surround are a single unit when viewed from the street. We paint frames, sills, fanlight surrounds, and pilasters in the same visit to keep colour and finish consistent.

Where Cotswold stone and timber meet, we check the junction and prime accordingly. For full exterior painting work, we coordinate door and facade in one visit.

Colour Consultation

Colour choice for a front door in a conservation area or listed building is not purely personal. We advise on heritage-appropriate palettes — deep greens, navy blues, and slate greys work well on Cotswold stone.

We flag any known colour restrictions in specific villages before you commit. For holiday let owners, we advise on colours that photograph well and hold their appearance between seasons.

Here’s How It Works

1. Inspection

We assess the door, frame, and porch surround. We note timber condition, existing paint adhesion, and any hardware that needs protecting or removing.

2. Hardware Removal

Letterboxes, knockers, handles, and hinges are removed or carefully masked. Paint on hardware is difficult to remove cleanly, so we protect it from the start.

3. Preparation

The door is cleaned with sugar soap. Loose and flaking paint is removed. Any rot is treated and made good. Glazing putty is replaced where cracked or missing.

4. Priming

Bare timber gets an exterior-grade primer. Previously painted surfaces in poor condition get a bonding primer. uPVC and composite surfaces get a specialist adhesion primer.

5. Finish Coats

Two coats of exterior gloss or satin, with full curing time between coats. High-exposure south and west-facing doors may get a third coat.
