Dining Room Painting Services
Walls and Ceiling
Dining room walls in Cotswolds period properties take colour well. Deep tones suit the proportions of Georgian townhouse dining rooms in Cirencester and Tetbury.
Lime plaster walls need a breathable primer before any finish coat. We assess each wall during the site visit and apply the right preparation for the surface.
Alcoves and Chimney Breast
Most Georgian and Victorian dining rooms have a chimney breast with alcoves on either side. The chimney breast is the natural focal point of the room.
We advise on colour relationships between the chimney breast, alcoves, and main walls. For a standalone feature, see our feature wall painting page.
Period Cornicing and Picture Rails
Georgian townhouse dining rooms often have run cornicing, picture rails, and dado rails. These details define the room’s period character.
Cornicing is hand-cut at both ceiling and wall junctions. Picture rails are painted in gloss or eggshell to contrast with the wall colour.
Panelled Doors and Dining Room Joinery
Original panelled doors are common in dining rooms across the district. Panel doors have more visual detail than flush doors and need hand-painting to preserve the shape of each moulding.
Skirting boards and architraves in period dining rooms are often deep and ornate. We hand-paint these features and sand between coats for a smooth, durable finish.
Open-Plan Dining and Kitchen
Many Cotswolds properties have been opened up to create combined dining and kitchen spaces. A decoration brief for these rooms needs to address both zones without creating a visual break.
We advise on how to handle the colour transition between cooking and dining areas, and how to keep period character in a modernised room.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit and Colour Consultation
We visit the dining room, assess the surfaces, and discuss the colour scheme. We identify lime plaster, cornicing, and any period features that need individual preparation.
2. Surface Preparation
Cracks and gaps are filled. Lime plaster is primed with a breathable primer. Previous paint in poor condition is sanded back. Woodwork is prepared separately with the correct primer.
3. Ceiling First
The ceiling is painted before walls to keep drips off finished surfaces. Cornicing is masked or hand-cut at the ceiling junction depending on the moulding condition.
4. Walls and Feature Walls
Main walls are painted in the agreed colour and finish. Feature walls or chimney breast are painted after the main walls to keep edges clean.
5. Woodwork and Final Details
Skirting boards, picture rails, dado rails, and architraves are painted last. Each gets two coats in the agreed finish. Edges are checked before we leave.
Dining Room Painting Costs in the Cotswolds
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01285 708711 for a precise quote.

Standard Dining Room
Victorian terrace or Stroud period property, walls and ceiling: £400 to £600.
Ceiling height and cornicing drive pricing — Georgian dining rooms in Cirencester and Tetbury have higher ceilings and more detail, which means more time.
Georgian Dining Room with Cornicing
Cirencester or Tetbury townhouse, full room: £600 to £900.
Original lime plaster with cracks and uneven surfaces needs more preparation than lined or re-plastered walls.
Open-Plan Dining and Kitchen
Combined scope, period property: £700 to £1,100.
Adding woodwork, picture rails, dado rails, and a feature wall to the baseline scope increases the cost.
