Deck Painting Services in the Cotswolds
We cover every element of a garden deck — boards, balustrades, steps, and finishes — using the right products for Cotswolds conditions.
Decking Boards
Decking boards are the most exposed part of any garden structure — they sit flat, collect water, and are walked on constantly. Weathered decking turns grey and splits if left untreated for more than a season or two.
We pressure wash boards and allow full drying time before applying any product. Board ends absorb moisture faster than face grain, so we treat them with an end-grain sealer before the main deck coat — a detail that makes a real difference to how long the finish lasts.
Balustrades and Posts
Balustrades and posts are often under-treated on a deck job. The problem areas are the end caps at post tops and the joint zones where rails meet posts.
We treat posts from base to cap and clear debris from joint zones before painting. Turned baluster profiles on raised decks need a brush finish — not a roller — to reach the full profile. Every baluster is coated individually.
Steps and Handrails
Steps and handrails get more physical contact than any other part of a deck. Handrails are gripped constantly and steps are foot-loaded on every use.
We apply a harder-wearing exterior paint or deck oil to steps for durability. Handrails are finished smoothly with no rough grain or splinters, and all step risers are treated as part of the same job.
Deck Staining vs Paint
Stain penetrates the timber and forms no film coat — it cannot peel or blister if moisture gets in from below. Paint forms a surface film that looks sharper but can lift if the deck is not completely dry when applied.
For gardens in Painswick, Tetbury, and Cirencester where a natural timber look is preferred, a quality exterior deck oil or semi-transparent stain is usually the right choice.
Anti-Slip Finishes
Decks in shaded gardens, north-facing terraces, or constantly damp areas can become slippery in wet weather. Anti-slip additive is mixed directly into the deck coating before application.
Properties in Stroud, Nailsworth, and valley-floor locations around Chipping Campden often have shaded conditions where anti-slip treatment is a practical need, not an optional extra.

How Our Deck Painting Process Works
1. Assessment
We inspect the full deck including boards, balustrades, steps, and posts. We note timber condition, moisture levels, and any structural repairs needed before coating.
2. Preparation
Deck boards are pressure washed and left to dry fully. Loose and flaking existing coatings are removed. Damaged boards are identified and repairs agreed before we start.
3. Priming
Bare or weathered timber is stabilised with a base coat or primer suited to the product being applied. Board end grain is sealed before the main coat.
4. First Coat
Applied by brush, working with the board direction, to ensure full penetration into the grain. Balustrades, posts, and steps are treated in the same pass.
5. Final Coat and Inspection
Second coat applied once the first has cured according to the manufacturer’s guidance. Full deck coverage is checked before we leave.
Deck Painting Costs in the Cotswolds
Prices below are estimates only — every deck is different. Call 01285 708711 for a precise quote. Three things drive the cost: size and layout, deck condition, and the product specified.

Small Garden Deck
Up to 20 sq m, ground level. Estimated cost: £200 to £380 including preparation and two coats.
This covers a straightforward deck in sound condition with no balustrade run or steps.
Medium Raised Deck
20 to 40 sq m with balustrades and steps. Estimated cost: £420 to £750 depending on balustrade complexity and board condition.
Raised decks with full balustrade runs and multiple steps take longer to prepare and coat thoroughly.
Larger Decked Terrace
40 sq m plus, multi-level or full balustrade run. Estimated cost: £700 to £1,400.
Holiday let properties and larger gardens in Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold typically fall into this bracket.
