Wood Painters in the Cotswolds

Cotswolds Decorators are wood painters in the Cotswolds. We handle interior hardwood, exterior timber, staining, varnishing, stripping, and bespoke joinery finishes — part of our exterior painting service.
Timber is the defining material in Cotswolds properties — exposed oak beams in stone cottages, original pine skirting in Cirencester townhouses, hardwood floors in Tetbury and Painswick period homes. Cotswolds Decorators match the correct finish to the timber species and condition.
- Interior hardwood: floors, stairs, banisters, beams, and fitted joinery
- Exterior timber: gates, pergolas, outbuildings, and cladding
- Staining and varnishing: protective and decorative finishes for all timber types

Wood Painting Services in the Cotswolds

Interior Hardwood
Hardwood interiors in Cotswolds period properties range from original oak flooring and exposed ceiling beams to fitted bookshelves, panelling, and staircase balusters. Each requires a finish appropriate to its use, species, and condition.
Hardwood floors, stairs, and banisters in Tetbury and Painswick period homes need a durable, wear-resistant finish. We apply in thin coats, allowing full cure between stages, to build protection without obscuring the grain character of the timber.
Exterior Timber
Exterior timber in the Cotswolds faces a demanding climate. West-facing elevations in Stroud and Nailsworth experience significant rainfall. Exposed north-facing woodwork in Chipping Campden and Stow-on-the-Wold is in shade for most of the year.
Correct exterior timber finishing starts with paint system selection. Bare timber needs a penetrating primer before any top coat. Previously painted surfaces in poor condition need stripping before they can hold a new finish.
Staining and Varnishing
Staining and varnishing preserves the natural character of timber while providing protection and colour. In period Cotswolds interiors, an oil-based stain on exposed oak beams or original floorboards gives a result that painted finishes cannot match.
All stain work is matched to existing timber tones in the room. We bring sample cards and do a test patch in a discreet area before committing to the full surface.
Stripping and Restoration
Period timber that has been painted over repeatedly loses its character beneath accumulated layers. Skirting boards, architraves, and panelling in Victorian terraces in Stroud often have eight to ten paint layers built up over 130 years.
We strip using appropriate methods for the location and scale: heat gun removal for large flat surfaces, chemical stripping for detailed mouldings. Once stripped, timber is assessed, any damage filled, and a fresh finish applied from bare material.
Bespoke Joinery
New joinery installed in period Cotswolds properties needs finishing to a standard that fits with the existing interior — replacement sash windows, fitted kitchen units, built-in shelving, and bespoke cabinetry.
We work with joiners and clients to agree colour, sheen level, and finish type before work begins. Colour matching to existing woodwork in the same room is part of every bespoke joinery job.
Our Wood Painting Process
1. Survey
We inspect all timber identified for treatment. We note species where relevant, existing finish condition, any damage, and whether stripping or repair is required before the new finish can go on.
2. Preparation
Surfaces are cleaned, stripped where necessary, filled, and abraded. Knots in softwood are sealed with shellac knotting before priming. Bare hardwood receives a penetrating primer or oil sealer first.
3. Priming
The correct primer for the timber and finish: oil-based for bare softwood, penetrating primer for hardwood, adhesion primer for previously finished surfaces in variable condition.
4. First Coat
Applied by brush following the grain. Cut in precisely at all junctions with walls, floors, and adjoining surfaces. Allowed to cure fully before the next coat.
5. Final Coat and Inspection
Second or third coat applied as required. Finish inspected under raking light for full coverage and consistency. Room left clean and tidy.
Wood Painting Costs in the Cotswolds
Prices below are estimates only. Every property and scope is different. Call 01285 708711 for a precise quote.
Condition
Timber in sound condition with stable existing finish costs less to prepare. Timber with failing paint, accumulated layers, or damage requires stripping and restoration before any new finish begins.
Species and Complexity
Hardwood with complex moulded profiles takes longer than flat softwood. Exposed beam work with irregular surfaces requires more time per square metre than flat skirting boards.
Scope
Interior woodwork in a single room costs less than a whole-house programme across floors, stairs, beams, and fitted joinery.
Typical range: single room interior woodwork £150–£350. Staircase and balustrade timber £400–£900. Whole-house interior woodwork £1,200–£3,000. For a full staircase commission, see our staircase painting page.

For garden fencing, see our fence painting page. For masonry and stonework treatment, see our masonry painting page.
