Cotswolds Staircase Painting Services
From Georgian townhouse staircases in Cirencester to stone cottage flights in Chipping Campden, we handle every aspect of staircase repainting.

Balusters and Spindles
Each baluster is painted individually. In Georgian townhouses in Cirencester and Tetbury, turned balusters have multiple profiles and shoulders. Every recess and ridge needs to be reached.
Sanding between coats and inspecting each baluster before moving on is standard. Victorian and Edwardian staircases in Stroud and Nailsworth often have more heavily turned spindles requiring the same careful approach.
Handrail and Newel Post
The handrail takes the most physical wear on any staircase. Previous paint builds up in the grooves of a moulded handrail and needs sanding back before any fresh coat goes on.
Newel posts in Georgian properties are often large, profiled pieces with cap details. We hand-paint the cap, shaft, and base separately to ensure full coverage without build-up at the transitions.
Stair Risers and Treads
Painted risers in a period property are typically white or cream gloss. Gloss is applied in two coats on risers with sanding between. Where treads are painted rather than carpeted, a hard-wearing floor paint or floor enamel is used.
The sequence of riser and tread painting is planned so the staircase remains usable throughout. A working access plan is agreed with you before starting.
Understairs Area
The understairs space is often neglected in a hallway repaint. A painted understairs cupboard or open understairs area in a consistent finish ties the whole hallway together.
Understairs areas are included in staircase or hallway projects on request. Where the understairs area has its own door, the door and frame are painted as part of the same scope.
Staircase and Landing Wall
The staircase wall from hall level to landing is awkward to reach and difficult to cut in at the correct raking angle against the stair string. Appropriately positioned ladders or tower scaffold in tall Georgian stairwells are used.
For combined hallway and staircase work, see our hallway painting page for the full scope and costs.
Our Staircase Painting Process
1. Site Visit and Access Plan
Your decorator walks the staircase, assesses the number and type of balusters, the condition of the handrail, and the height of the staircase wall. An access plan is agreed and it is confirmed whether the staircase can remain in use throughout.
2. Surface Preparation
Balusters, handrail, and newel post are sanded back to remove build-up and provide a key for the new paint. Stair risers are prepared and filled where needed. The staircase wall is primed with the correct primer for the plaster type.
3. Staircase Wall
The wall is painted first. Access for the upper sections is set up safely. Cornicing and stair string junctions are hand-cut carefully.
4. Balusters and Joinery
Each baluster is painted individually, with two coats and sanding between. Handrail, newel post, and spindle sections are painted in sequence. We work in sections to maintain usable access where possible.
5. Risers and Treads
Risers are painted last to minimise contact during the job. Treads, if in scope, are painted in a separate phase with a drying period agreed before the staircase is used again.

Staircase Painting Costs in the Cotswolds
Staircase painting in the Cotswolds typically ranges from £600 to £1,600. Call 01285 708711 to arrange a site visit and written quote.
Cottage Staircase
A cottage staircase with simple balusters, a straight flight, and walls included typically costs £600 to £900. The number of balusters is the single biggest factor in price: more balusters mean more time.
Victorian or Edwardian Staircase
A Victorian or Edwardian staircase with turned spindles, handrail, newel, and wall typically costs £800 to £1,200. Heavy paint build-up on balusters and handrails needs sanding back before repainting.
Georgian Townhouse Staircase
A Georgian townhouse staircase in Cirencester or Tetbury with a double-height staircase wall and full scope typically costs £1,000 to £1,600. For ceiling painting in conjunction with staircase work, see our ceiling painting page.
