Plasterboard Painting Services in the Cotswolds

Freshly Plastered Walls

Fresh plaster must dry fully before any paint is applied — a minimum of four to six weeks after plastering is complete. The plaster colour changes from dark pink-brown to an even pale buff as it dries.

We inspect plaster dryness before any work starts. Where plaster is drying unevenly, we delay the sealing coat until the surface is ready. Rushing this stage costs significantly more to rectify than waiting.

Sealing Coat Application

A sealing coat is a diluted first coat applied to raw plaster before any standard emulsion. It seals the surface gradually rather than forming an impermeable film that traps moisture.

We mix the sealing coat at the correct dilution ratio and apply it in a thin, even coat. Only once it has fully cured do the final finish coats go on. Skipping the sealing coat is the most common cause of premature paint failure on new plaster.

First and Second Fix

Decorating new-build rooms and extensions involves two distinct stages. First fix covers the sealing coat and initial preparation before final fixtures are installed. Second fix delivers the completion stage once skirting, door frames, and fittings are in place.

We time first fix to align with the plastering schedule and return for second fix once the builder has completed all other work. This avoids damage to decoration from ongoing construction activity.

New Build and Extension

Period Cotswolds properties are regularly extended with modern plasterboard and gypsum plaster, unlike the lime plaster found in original structures. Where an extension joins the original building, we treat the junction carefully.

New plasterboard takes a different primer and paint sequence to adjacent lime plaster. We specify and apply the correct products for each surface within the same room.

Plaster Repair and Preparation

Rooms in period Cotswolds properties often have plaster repairs alongside original plasterwork. A damaged section of ceiling in a Fairford Victorian terrace may have been repaired with new plasterboard and skim.

We identify all repair areas before starting and apply the appropriate primer to each section. The goal is a finish coat that reads as one consistent surface across both surface types. For ceiling painting in period rooms, this preparation is especially important.

Our Plasterboard Painting Process

1. Assessment

We confirm plaster dryness before any work begins. We identify all surface types across the room and note any repairs, patches, or areas of differing absorbency.

2. Sealing Coat

Applied to all fresh plaster surfaces at the correct dilution. Allowed to cure fully before the next stage. No full-strength emulsion goes on until the sealing coat is complete.

3. First Inspection

After the sealing coat dries, we check for any areas of uneven absorbency or remaining moisture. Additional preparation is applied where needed before proceeding.

4. First Full Coat

Applied once the sealing coat has fully cured. This coat reveals surface texture and any filling required at returns, reveals, and board joints.

5. Filling and Finish Coat

Any remaining board joints, scrim lines, or imperfections are filled and sanded before the final coat. Finish coat applied to the full room in the specified colour.

Timing and Dryness

If plaster is not fully dry when we arrive, the job cannot proceed. Return visits add cost. We recommend coordinating the decoration programme to allow full drying time after plastering is complete.

A single newly plastered room (walls and ceiling, sealing coat plus two finish coats) typically ranges from £350 to £700 depending on room size and ceiling height.

Board Joint Quality

Poorly taped or filled board joints require additional preparation before painting can begin. We assess joint condition at the survey and include any additional preparation work in the quote.

Extension decoration (single-storey rear extension, first and second fix) typically ranges from £800 to £1,600 depending on room count and woodwork scope.

Ceiling and Returns

Ceilings on plasterboard rooms in period properties often have a reveal or return detail where new meets old. These junctions require careful cutting-in and careful product management where surfaces differ.

A loft conversion (two rooms, sealing coat, two finish coats, woodwork) typically ranges from £1,200 to £2,200. For individual rooms see our bathroom painting service.
