Living Room Painting Services
Walls and Ceilings
Living room walls in Cotswolds period properties are almost always lime plaster. Original lime plaster is breathable and needs a lime-compatible primer before any finish coat.
We assess the plaster during the site visit and apply the correct preparation. High ceilings in Georgian townhouses in Cirencester and Tetbury need careful roller technique and full cornicing cut-in.
Chimney Breast and Alcoves
The chimney breast is the focal point of most Cotswolds living rooms. Whether it is a grand Georgian marble surround or a low stone fireplace, the wall treatment around it defines the room.
Painting the chimney breast in a deeper or contrasting colour adds depth and warmth. We advise on all options during the site visit.
Bay Windows and Period Joinery
Georgian and Victorian living rooms in the Cotswolds often have bay windows with original joinery. Sash frames, window boards, panelled shutters, and deep reveals all take paint well but need careful preparation.
Original timber frames are sanded back to sound material, primed correctly, and finished in gloss or satin. Shutters are folded out and painted on both faces before closing.
Cornicing and Ceiling Roses
Deep cornicing and moulded ceiling roses are a feature of Georgian living rooms across the Cotswolds. These details are the most visible in the room and the most demanding to cut in well.
Cornicing is hand-cut at both the ceiling and wall junctions. Ceiling roses are assessed individually and hand-cut where the detail requires it.
Period Skirting, Picture Rails, and Architraves
Original skirting boards in Georgian properties are deep and often ornately profiled. Picture rails sit above the door line and architraves around original door openings carry moulding that requires hand-painting.
We paint all of these as part of the living room woodwork scope. Each receives two coats of the agreed satin or eggshell finish. For related services see bedroom painting.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit and Colour Consultation
We visit the living room, assess all surfaces, and discuss the colour brief. We identify lime plaster, cornicing, and period joinery needing individual preparation. Colour consultation is included.
2. Furniture Protection
Larger pieces stay in the room, moved to the centre and covered with dust sheets. We ask that breakables and personal items are removed before we arrive. Floors are fully protected.
3. Surface Preparation
Cracks and gaps are filled. Lime plaster is primed with a breathable primer. Woodwork is prepared separately with the correct primer for the material.
4. Ceiling and Cornicing
Ceiling is painted first. Cornicing is hand-cut at both junctions on the final coat. Ceiling roses are completed before moving to the walls.
5. Walls and Woodwork
Main walls are painted in the agreed colour. The chimney breast or feature wall is completed after the main walls. Skirting boards, picture rails, and architraves are painted last in two coats.
Living Room Painting Costs in the Cotswolds
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01285 708711 for a precise quote.

Stone Cottage Sitting Room
Lower ceiling, walls and ceiling, limited woodwork. Typical cost: £500 to £700.
These rooms usually have good lime plaster condition and straightforward scope, making them the most affordable option.
Victorian Terrace Living Room
Stroud or Cirencester area, full room repaint. Typical cost: £550 to £750.
Ceiling height is moderate and cornicing less deep than Georgian stock. Surface condition varies with the age of the last repaint.
Georgian Reception Room with Cornicing
Cirencester or Tetbury townhouse, full scope. Typical cost: £750 to £1,100.
High ceilings, deep cornicing, ceiling roses, chimney breast feature wall, and full woodwork all increase the cost incrementally.
