Walls and Ceilings
The right colour makes a real difference to how a workspace feels over long periods. Calm, grounded tones work best.
In Georgian townhouses in Cirencester, Tetbury, and Moreton-in-Marsh, home offices occupy rooms with period proportions. High ceilings and deep cornicing need precise cutting-in. Original lime plaster walls need a breathable primer before any finish coat.
Low-Odour Paints for Working Spaces
Strong paint smell in a working space is a practical problem. Standard oil-based products emit fumes for days. We use low-VOC water-based paints for home office jobs, particularly in occupied properties.
Low-odour options are available across most major ranges including Dulux Trade, Farrow and Ball, and Little Greene. Most home offices are back in use within 24 hours of the final coat.
Built-in Shelving and Alcoves
Georgian study rooms and converted library spaces in Cotswolds townhouses often have deep alcoves with bookshelves. Painting the inside of alcove shelving in a contrasting or deeper colour adds depth.
We paint built-in shelving, fitted desks, and alcove joinery as part of the home office scope. Timber joinery is prepared and primed before the finish coat.

Feature Walls and Garden Office Conversions

Feature Walls for Focus
A single wall behind the desk works as a visual anchor. A deeper tone behind the primary work surface defines the working zone within the room.
In stone cottages with smaller rooms, a feature wall in a warm, grounded colour prevents the room from feeling blank without making it feel heavy. We advise on placement and colour during the site visit.
Outbuildings and Garden Office Conversions
The Cotswolds has a significant stock of converted agricultural buildings used for home working. Stables, barns, and outbuildings across the district are a common choice for home offices.
We assess converted outbuildings individually. Exposed stone is generally best left unpainted. Rendered or plastered interior walls can be finished in the standard way with the correct primer for the surface type.
Period Property Specialists
Original lime plaster is primed with a breathable, lime-compatible primer before any finish coat. This ensures adhesion holds long-term and the wall stays breathable.
This approach is essential in properties with original lime plaster, which is common across listed properties in the district.
Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit and Brief
We visit the home office, assess the surfaces, and discuss the colour brief and any specific requirements — including paint odour sensitivity, period features, and built-in joinery.
2. Surface Preparation
Walls and ceiling are filled and primed. Lime plaster is primed with a breathable primer. Joinery and shelving are sanded and primed separately.
3. Ceiling and Cornice
Ceiling is painted before walls. Cornicing or coving is hand-cut at both junctions. Ceiling roses, where present, are masked and finished with care.
4. Walls and Feature Wall
Main walls are painted in the agreed colour. Feature wall or alcove treatment is completed after the main walls to ensure clean edges.
5. Joinery and Final Details
Built-in shelving, desks, and alcove woodwork are painted last. Skirting boards, architraves, and window frames receive two coats. The room is checked before we leave.
