Smooth Ceiling Painting
A smooth ceiling in good condition takes flat emulsion well — two coats are standard. In strong light or near skylights, roller marks and patches show up clearly, so application technique matters.
In Georgian properties in Cirencester and Tetbury, ceilings of 3 metres or more need extension poles and careful roller work. We allow full drying time between coats to keep coverage even and avoid visible lap marks.
Artex and Textured Ceilings
Artex ceilings are common in Cotswolds properties built or updated in the 1970s and 1980s. They can be painted without disruption using a thick-nap roller that pushes paint into the texture.
We do not sand Artex. Pre-2000 Artex may contain asbestos, and sanding creates a serious dust risk. We treat all pre-2000 textured ceilings with caution and will advise you honestly.

Water Staining and Ceiling Damage

Any active damp must be fixed before we start. We confirm the source of a stain is resolved before quoting the ceiling work. Painting over an active leak will not last.
High Ceilings and Access

Here’s How It Works
1. Ceiling Assessment
We inspect the ceiling, check the plaster type, and look for water staining, cracks, or cornicing that needs attention. We note the ceiling height and confirm what access equipment is needed.
2. Surface Preparation
Cracks and gaps in the ceiling plaster are filled. Loose or flaking paint is removed. Water stains are treated with shellac-based stain block. Lime plaster ceilings are primed with a breathable, lime-compatible primer.
3. Cornicing and Rose Protection
Cornicing junctions are marked out. Ceiling roses are assessed for masking or hand-painting. Period mouldings are never masked with wide tape that could damage the plaster.
4. Ceiling Painting
Flat emulsion is applied in two coats with full drying time between. Ceilings are painted before walls in a full room repaint to keep drips off finished wall surfaces.
5. Cutting In and Finish Check
Cornicing and rose edges are hand-cut on the final coat. We inspect the finished ceiling in daylight to check for patches, lap marks, and missed areas before we leave.
