Ceiling Painting Services

Smooth Ceiling Painting

A smooth ceiling in good condition takes flat emulsion well — two coats are standard. In strong light or near skylights, roller marks and patches show up clearly, so application technique matters.

In Georgian properties in Cirencester and Tetbury, ceilings of 3 metres or more need extension poles and careful roller work. Full drying time is allowed between coats to keep coverage even and avoid visible lap marks.

Artex and Textured Ceilings

Artex ceilings are common in Cotswolds properties built or updated in the 1970s and 1980s. They can be painted without disruption using a thick-nap roller that pushes paint into the texture.

Artex is never sanded. Pre-2000 Artex may contain asbestos, and sanding creates a serious dust risk. All pre-2000 textured ceilings are treated with caution and you will be advised honestly.

Cornicing and Ceiling Roses

Period properties across the Cotswolds have run plaster cornicing and moulded ceiling roses — some of the most delicate features in a period home. Cornicing is hand-cut at both the ceiling junction and the wall junction.

In listed properties in Chipping Campden and Painswick, we take care not to damage original mouldings. A poorly painted ceiling rose is visible from every angle in the room.

Water Staining and Ceiling Damage

Ceilings that have suffered a leak need specific preparation before painting. Water staining bleeds through standard emulsion even after several coats — a shellac-based stain block is applied before any emulsion goes on.

Any active damp must be fixed before work starts. The source of a stain is confirmed as resolved before quoting the ceiling work. Painting over an active leak will not last.

High Ceilings and Access

Georgian townhouses in Cirencester, Tetbury, and Moreton-in-Marsh often have ceilings that need access equipment. Tower scaffolding or mobile access towers are used where ceiling height requires it.

Access equipment costs are included in the quote. Ladders alone are not used for ceiling work above 3 metres — a stable working platform gives a better result and a safer job.

Here’s How It Works

1. Ceiling Assessment

Your decorator inspects the ceiling, checks the plaster type, and looks for water staining, cracks, or cornicing that needs attention. Ceiling height is noted and access equipment confirmed.

2. Surface Preparation

Cracks and gaps in the ceiling plaster are filled. Loose or flaking paint is removed. Water stains are treated with shellac-based stain block. Lime plaster ceilings are primed with a breathable, lime-compatible primer.

3. Cornicing and Rose Protection

Cornicing junctions are marked out. Ceiling roses are assessed for masking or hand-painting. Period mouldings are never masked with wide tape that could damage the plaster.

4. Ceiling Painting

Flat emulsion is applied in two coats with full drying time between. Ceilings are painted before walls in a full room repaint to keep drips off finished wall surfaces.

5. Cutting In and Finish Check

Cornicing and rose edges are hand-cut on the final coat. The finished ceiling is inspected in daylight to check for patches, lap marks, and missed areas before the job is closed.

Ceiling Height

Ceilings above 3 metres need access equipment. Georgian townhouses in Cirencester and Tetbury regularly reach this height. The access equipment adds time and cost to the job.

Cornicing and Detail

A plain smooth ceiling is quicker than one with run cornicing, a ceiling rose, and period mouldings that need precise hand-cutting. Expect to pay more for period detail work.

Ceiling painting typically costs £150 to £500 per ceiling, depending on size, height, and condition. Painting ceilings as part of a full repaint? See our hallway painting page for combined period room pricing.

Surface Condition

Water staining, cracks, or previous poor preparation add time before any paint can go on. Standard ceilings with no cornicing range from £150 to £250. Period ceilings with cornicing range from £250 to £400.

High ceilings with a rose and access equipment in a listed property typically cost £350 to £500+. Call 01285 708711 to arrange a site visit and written quote.
